Of Swords and Legends
Duncan sat on the deck of the barge, feet hanging over the side. He drank the rest of his scotch down and refilled the glass with the bottle by his side.
Amanda pulled her robe around her shoulders, and stepped outside, the deck cold on her bare feet. "Duncan?" she called out softly. She walked up to him, and rested a hand on his head, threading her fingers through his loose hair.
Duncan leaned his head back into her hands slightly. "He was just a child."
"I know," she said, "they both were." Amanda's voice was quiet, "Sometimes I hate this life."
"We failed them," His voice broke slightly as he reached up to twine his fingers with hers.
Amanda dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around Duncan, and resting her head on his shoulder. "No Duncan. We did everything we could. They were new to game, it was bad luck."
He wasn't even immortal," He shook his head turning towards her. "Connor is going to hunt, I should stop him Amanda--but I don't want to."
She hugged him against her. "Then don't. Connor is good. He can handle whoever it was, and I can't say they wouldn't deserve it." Amanda sounded angry.
"Beli was stubborn Amanda, you did your best with her."
"I know," she answered him softly.
Duncan kissed her gently. "This...is going to take us all I while to deal with. I just hope Connor can recover, Jon...was his life for years."
Amanda sniffled softly, wiping away a stray tear. "He was such a good child, Duncan. Even Belinda... she just wanted to live."
"And they weren't even given a chance to fight back." Duncan held Amanda close and stroked her hair.
"I hope Connor does go after him, Duncan. That man," Amanda took a deep, steadying breath. "It wasn't even a fair fight!"
"I know. Connor will find him," Duncan closed his eyes for a moment. "And if he...fails...I will."
Amanda ran her hands over Duncan's forearms. "Connor would want you to."
Duncan rested his forehead against her shoulder. "I feel like finding Richie and hugging him."
Maybe you should," Amanda smiled slightly. "I'm sure he's looking for the same comfort now."
Duncan nodded. "Right now I just want to hold you, love."
"Come inside then. I need you now."
